Soma, it means no plastic, no chemicals and a filter that is completely organic, made of a coconut shell carbon and a plant-based casing. The filter material starts out as coconut shells whose carbon granules are heat-treated to become porous and super absorbent to catch chemicals such as chlorine and remove bad taste and odors. It sits inside sleek, minimalist carafes and pitchers that look great on a table and invite you to stay hydrated.
The Soma Water Filter comes in three parts: the carafe, the filter holder, and the filter itself. The plastic parts are a lovely white plant-based plastic with a soft finish and again, entirely (commercially) biodegradable. The glass carafe is thick and seamless, great for drinks even without the filter.
Filtering is easy: just pour water through the top and water immediately starts dispensing into the carafe. Soma is quick to point out that their filter is made of coconut shells while other filters use beads of plastic. It’s nice that their entire product is sustainable and compostable, but one thing to note is that the filter is only up to NSF/ANSI Standard 42. This basically means it’s only certified for “aesthetic” taste and flavor related filtering and doesn’t actually remove any bad stuff.
The Soma filter sits in the minimalist, shatter-resistant Soma Water Carafe or Pitcher to draw out impurities like chlorine. The water becomes microbiologically safe drinking water. The hourglass-shaped carafe was engineered in Germany and holds 48 oz of water. The Soma Pitcher is 10.5 inches tall, 6 inches wide, and 9 inches deep and holds 80 oz. The filter lasts about two months, or 40 gallons; then you get a fresh filter delivery via a subscription mail service. The filter removes other impurities as well, but due to pending certification, these cannot be listed just yet. Note that the Soma filter process does not remove fluoride.
