OSSIC X : The World’s First 3D Headphones that Calibrate to Your Head

Posted in HeadPhones, and Technology

OSSIC X is the world’s first 3D audio headphone that instantly calibrates to the listener, increasing the sense of auditory space, and acoustically recreating the way you hear the world everyday. By pairing advanced 3D audio algorithms with head-tracking and individual anatomy calibration, we deliver incredibly accurate 3D sound to your ears. Experience music like never before. Get more immersed in virtual reality. Bring gaming to the next level.

INSTANT CALIBRATION FOR A 10X AUDIO EXPERIENCE

OSSIC X calibrates to the individual listener’s head and ear features, increasing overall sound quality and ensuring the most accurate sound placement, making for a listening experience that’s ten times more immersive than current technologies.

  • Increased audio immersion
  • Hear your movies and music like never before
  • Increased sense of space with your audio content

“The founding team were all members in the acoustic engineering department of Logitech,” says Riggs(Founder and CEO). “Over the years we’ve gotten to work on a bunch of different projects, creating [top of the line] headphones like the Logitech G35 and G930 gaming headsets, as well as the UE Boom (a popular Bluetooth speaker), but what we’ve realized is that none of the headphones were very good at localizing sound.”

OSSIC has achieved numerous features that serve to enrich the overall listening experience. Through the use of multi-driver arrays—that is, ‘eight individual drives which work in tandem to play back sound to the correct portion of your ear,’ allowing the sound fields to mimic your unique ear shape’s interaction with sounds in reality —OSSIC X integrates head tracking into the equation and even calibrates to your unique head shape and anatomy for incredibly accurate sound placement, quality and immersion.

‘How we hear the world is not a one-size-fits all situation. It’s our physical anatomy that plays a critical role in defining how sound enters our ears. This is called our head related transfer function, or HRTF. Our individual HRTF is based on our position in space, the size of our head and the shape of our ears,’ reads the company’s Kickstarter page.

Using collected data as feedback the second you put OSSIC X on your head, a smart algorithm plays back sound according to your position and anatomy. Imagine having a surround sound system on your head—that’s OSSIC X in a nutshell. According to Riggs, the demoed headsets reached a resolution as rich as 500 virtual speakers.

OSSIC as a company doesn’t want to limit its scope solely to manufacturing hardware—for content creators, the startup is crafting plugins to enable individuals to design ‘fully immersive soundscapes without installing ceiling speakers or sitting in your studio.’

WE ALL HEAR THE WORLD DIFFERENTLY BASED ON OUR ANATOMY

How we hear the world is not a one-size-fits all situation. It’s our physical anatomy that plays a critical role in defining how sound enters our ears. This is called our head related transfer function, or HRTF. Our individual HRTF is based on:

  • Our position in space
  • The size of our head
  • The shape of our ears

“We’re really stoked to be doing this. Most companies are either hardware or software companies, our model is a highly integrated mixture of both. [On top of that], each member of the team has been doing audio for at least 10 years. It’s really a dream project for us—all the founders are engineers, heavy gamers and musicians so its really amazing; super fun.”
