October 15th is Global Handwashing Day!

Handwashing is an important part of keeping food safe, preventing diseases, and helping children grow strong. Our tagline, Clean hands – a recipe for health, reminds us to make handwashing a part of every meal.

Establish places to wash your hands in the household, in your community, in schools, workplaces, and in health facilities.

When to wash your hands

You should wash your hands thoroughly:

  • after using the toilet or changing nappies.
  • before,during and after preparing food.
  • between handling raw and cooked or ready-to-eat food.
  • before eating.
  • after using a tissue or handkerchief.
  • before and after attending to sick children or other family members.
  • after smoking.
  • after handling rubbish or working in the garden.
  • after handling animals.

How Do Clean Hands Help Health?

Good hand washing is the first line of defense against the spread of many illnesses — from the common cold to more serious infections, such as meningitis, bronchiolitis, the flu, hepatitis A, and many types of diarrhea.
