Farm From a Box Tool Kit For Tech-Powered Agriculture

Posted in Agriculture/Farming, and Technology

Farm from a Box provides communities with the tools required to grow their own food and earn an income. Built from a modified shipping container, each unit contains a complete ecosystem of smart farm technologies to enhance agricultural productivity; from renewable power and micro-drip irrigation, to Information and Communications Technology.

Farm from a Box built in a modified shipping container that’s designed for easy delivery to remote locations, generates solar power, and collects rainwater (or connects to a well or a city supply). Then it powers a drip irrigation system that can deliver water directly to plants, helping save water and increasing yield. In a year, a farm powered by the kit can grow enough food for 150 people, the organization says.

“Rather than giving people short-term food aid, we can do better, by giving people the tools and infrastructure they need to do it on their own,” says Brandi DeCarli, one of the cofounders. The startup is raising funds on Republic, a new equity crowdfunding site that focuses on mission-driven companies.

Highlights

  • Farm from a Box is a complete easy-start toolkit for a small farm – One Box provides all of the tools needed for a 2-acre farm and can grow enough for 150 people every year.
  • Grows all crops – Because our system is designed to grow food outside in the sun and soil, the farm can produce a broad range of crops- vegetables, fruits, root crops, grains, even cannabis.
  • Powered by solar energy – No grid access? no problem. Farm from a Box is powered by renewable energy, making it an independent, clean energy system that saves money.
  • Smart technology increases efficiency – Advances in technology can make farming easier and more efficient. Each Box comes Wi-Fi enabled, and a IoT suite helps monitor activity and performance.

Regenerative Agriculture

Sustainable, climate smart farming starts with restoring and maintaining healthy soil. Healthy soils produce higher yields. Techniques like composting, crop rotation and diversification, cover cropping, and no till practices nurture the soils fertility and helps produce a healthier crop.

Farm from a Box integrates an agroecological farming approach that actively regenerates life and biodiversity, using natural resources wisely.
