EnergySquare : Small Sticker and Pad Charging Your Phone

Energysquare is a French startup that wants to change the way you charge your electronics: no messy cables, just a thin surface that conducts energy.

Energysquare is composed of conductive squares nestled in an insulating material. To charge a device, you add a thin metal sticker to its back (it plugs in to the USB port). The conductive dots on the sticker activates the battery in the charger.

The pad will charge all devices at full capacity, and is currently compatible with any smartphones or tablets with micro USB connectors, lightning connectors, and USB type-C connectors. In the future, the company hopes to create even less obtrusive charging devices, include ones directly built into furniture (one day, you might be able to set your phone down on the table to charge). The sleek charging pads are available now on Kickstarter.

If you want to keep using a classic charger, you can just unplug the sticker temporally and plug it back in when you’re done!

Energysquare CEO Thibaut Guédou said unlike the most widespread technology today, induction charging, Energysquare’s induction technology doesn’t require a “tight coupling” with a charging pad, and users can simply drop their device anywhere on it and it will charge.

Energysquare is a new generation of wireless chargers that will allow you to charge multiple devices at the same speed as classic chargers, just by placing it on an ultra-thin pad. No induction, no electromagnetic waves, we are using our own patented conductive charging technology!

Additionally, Guédou said, Energysquare’s conductive wireless charging loses far less energy (1% to 2%) than magnetic resonance. The average electromagnetic inductive charging technology has an efficiency rating of about 86%, meaning 14% of the energy is lost in transition.

Each individual square of the Energysquare’s charging pad can deliver up to 25 watts of power.

“With the right power adapter, the small surface can deliver up to 200W,” Guédou said. “Induction standards usually go up to 5W. The benefits are twofold: in the short term, we can put as many devices as needed on the same pad. In the medium term, we have the potential to charge every kind of electronic device: laptops, drones, wireless earphones, weather station, etc.”
