Kodak Ektra, named after its classic 1941 rangefinder, it seems to hold one major difference. Well, aside from the fact that one’s actually a camera, and the other’s a smartphone. The difference is that this one appears to be Kodak in name only, being produced by UK based Bullitt Group.
Kodak Ektra: 21MP, UHD 4K video, f/2 fixed lens, optical image stabilization.
The Ektra features a 21-megapixel sensor with an f/2.0 lens aperture. On paper, that should produce more detailed images that the 12MP units found in other flagship smartphones. The rear camera also packs phase detection autofocus points, optical image stabilisation, and a dual LED flash. Maybe the key here is the software powering the camera. This comes from camera software experts Arcsoft.
Away from the camera, other specs include it runs Android 6.0, and comes with Snapseed preinstalled for photo editing. There’s also a Kodak app called Super 8, which adds vintage film filters to your snaps and video. Finally, because Kodak is all about physical photographs, there also an app which allows you order photos directly from your camera roll and have them posted to you in the iconic Kodak yellow envelope. It has Helio X20 2.3GHz Decacore processor with 3GB RAM, 32GB storage (expandable with MicroSD cards), and a 3000mAh battery with USB-C fast charging.
It features a DSLR-like control dial, with haptic feedback, with a manual mode that lets you control both shutter speed, ISO and white balance. It also offers “Extensive Scene Mode” options for those who don’t want to have to think too much about their photography. Looking at the camera itself, it’s quite an interesting design. Obviously the front looks like a modern smartphone, but the rear looks a little more like a camera. It even features something of a grip, albeit quite slender.
The Kodak Ektra is being released in the UK first, in December, priced at £449. No word yet on release in other countries. You can find out more on the Kodak website.
